This week’s LensProtoGo 52 Week Project theme was “Memorial Day”. Being new to the Charleston area, I searched for veteran memorials/statues. I ended up finding this pretty large dedicated war memorial spot in Mt. Pleasant’s Waterfront Park. They have a beautiful statue that is very striking, and the folded flag is unfortunately too familiar of theme of military families, and it reminds me of my grandfather’s folded flag they was on display in my childhood home.
This sculpture is of a grieving woman holding a folded American flag in one arm, resting her other arm on a combat helmet and rifle. This sculpture was designed to represent the “contradictory emotions of loss and hope”.
Surrounding this statue of our hundreds of names of local South Carolina war veterans who were killed in action. This sculpture was designed by Raymond Kaskey.
It worked really well for this week’s theme, and I’m so glad I came across it.
